The way of salvation has been explained to you, and an offer made to you of Jesus- but you long since professed to accept Jesus, and have long known the way of salvation. The vows of the Lord are upon you, but you have not kept them. The lords and the gods you once renounced have regained much of their old dominion, and you have been unfaithful.

If such is anything like a true description of you, your case is indeed pitiable. You have greatly sinned. You have brought disrepute on the cause of God, and dishonoured the name of Christ. The Spirit of God has Himself declared that it would have been better for you not to have known the way of righteousness, than after you had known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto you.

(2 Peter ii. 21.) The Scripture, which calls everything by its true name, calls your sin adultery, --spiritual adultery- unfaithfulness, not to man, but to Christ. You may think little of such a sin. I have heard people who would turn crimson with shame at the very mention of the word unfaithful, if applied to an earthly husband, say of themselves without a blush, that they had been very unfaithful to Christ.

But are vows made to God to be thought less of than vows made to man? Your own evil heart of unbelief, not realizing that this union is even more literal, in that it is more lasting than any earthly union, may answer this question as it pleases- but how does God answer it? In His sight it is amongst the most terrible of all sins- nor is there one in the whole Bible, if we except the sin against the Holy Ghost, against which such judgments...
