an amusing guide to staying in the country for town dwellers. There are heplful chapters on various animals one might encounter, like cows, horses, sheep etc, and chapters on birds, insects, trees flowers etc. On cows for example she writes thoughtfully: the Londoner should force himself to walk through fields of cattle without displaying any sign of nerves. There is nothing which more provokes derision than cow-cowardice. a request to be allowed to walk round the edge of a field full of cows, is bound to be greeted with mocking laughter, besides which it makes the walk longer.

And on sheep: Londoners cannot hope to cope with sheep. There are at least thirty varieties, some looking ridiculously rotound like advertisements for michelin tyres, some in long coagulated coats looking like miniature llamas, some with naked white legs, others with black woolly faces and black hairy legs. the town dweller who reads this book will then br prepared for anything they may encounter in the country.
